Gowanus Affordable Housing
Project type
Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn, NYC
Date
Summer 2021
The studio explored the design of affordable housing along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York, coupled with a comprehensive master plan for the surrounding area. The proposal sought to weave a new layer of urbanism into the neighborhood while respecting the existing fabric, topography, and social dynamics, as well as anticipating future environmental challenges.
With the ongoing cleanup initiatives of the canal led by local conservancy organizations, the site presents an opportunity to reimagine housing that serves the existing Brooklyn community. The project emphasizes the preservation of natural ecosystems and wetlands, while introducing a continuous green promenade along the canal that connects adjacent buildings and public spaces.
A key priority was to integrate street-level commercial opportunities that provide jobs and services for local residents, ensuring economic vitality while resisting the forces of displacement and gentrification. In this way, the project frames affordable housing not only as shelter, but as a catalyst for community resilience, ecological balance, and inclusive growth.
